With the recent coverage on Mashable about patent wars, excuse me, constant coverage on Mashable Techcrunch and CNN about Apple vs X-major technological near monopoly of a company, and X-tech industry leader vs Apple, I have gotten annoyed. The patent wars for smart phones has gotten out of control!
To start off with I will admit I have a general displeasure for Apple. As a very intellectual child I used the computers at my elementary school to play games on eight-inch floppy disk. By fourth grade the school system had upgraded to a networked system of Apple computers that: lagged horribly and froze (this would be my first experience with ‘freezing,’ and by far is no where close to WinME’s BSoD); could only let one person play ‘Carmen Santiago’ within the whole school; required increasingly dissimilar and random passwords to be memorized to perform daily tasks.
The next school I went to had Windows 98 with the same type of programs, could not tell the difference to with my young eyes, and my Dad bought the family a x486DX with MS-DOS + Windows 3.1. Thus starts my love affair with Microsoft and Windows.
So with the release of the Apple iPhone I thought, “meh, it’s a touch screen blackberry, that’s been done before,” then came the sticker shock and thus me laughing at people who bought it, then the v2 and then v3 sticker shock just lighted a flame rage, for Apple, and pity for people who bought it.
So yes, to start with I just do not like Apple, but on to the issue of patent wars.
Search through Mashable for ‘patents’ and you will see Apple, Google, Samsung, and Microsoft suiting it out over patents, for essentially nothing. For example there is a detailed post showing that the shape of the Apple iPhone is such a bare-bones minimum design a patent of it is the modern version to patenting the wheel.
One point that is totally enraging is a post on DailyTech that show evidence that Apple doctored photos for a patent case. Whats more horrific is that it is the sheer number of patent troll companies running around now for example, Digitude, and Cliff Island LLC. Companies with large sums of capital and further corporate backing from the likes of Apple, and an employee line up of lawyers, paralegals, and legal aids, and do-boys exclusively. Apple just said hell with our legal branch, lets outsource it to a company the size of us that will take it on as a dedicated task. megalomania aside with Digitudes goal of ‘ending patent wars, by owning everything.’
I’m tired of all of this it makes me sick. At least Apple is losing the cellular communications patents litigation, cellphones are cellphones!
